Safe Harbor ends another successful season
After a review of the schedule and the weather conditions, the steering committee of Safe Harbor of Grand Traverse Inc. (comprised of the 24 participating churches) has determined that Saturday April 8 will be the last day of the emergency shelter season.
“Overall I’d say we had another successful season.” Says Mike McDonald, Steering Committee Chairperson. “The numbers were about average, and there were very few incidents”.
By the time the shelter finishes up, the nightly average of 40 people (an average of 9 women) will just about match last season’s average of 41. The biggest night was 73 people, with over 17 nights above 60 persons. Approximately 182 unique individuals will be served for about 6600 bed nights, representing 13,200 meals.
Safe Harbor continues to work with the City of Traverse City on acquiring a permanent facility. With no timeline on when said facility would be open, Safe Harbor has already begun plans to host the 2016 / 2017 seasons within the churches. This year, as in years past, several churches were put into a position where they exceeded “comfortable capacity”.
